Castellana Caves: an enchanted journey into the heart of Puglia

Autore: Redazione 27/08/2025 10:42

Just a few kilometers from Alberobello lies one of the most fascinating geological masterpieces in Italy. We are talking about the Castellana Caves, a karst system carved into the bowels of the Murge plateau in Puglia, which enchants all visitors with its stalactites and stalagmites. They were discovered in 1938 and are today an unmissable destination for those traveling in Puglia and seeking something different from the region's usual pristine seas.

The caves extend for over three kilometers, with the Grotta Bianca (White Cave) being the final jewel of the karst system. The White Cave is a masterpiece of shimmering crystals, considered one of the most beautiful in the world. The tourist route is optional—it can be one kilometer or three kilometers—and passes through majestic halls, such as the Caverna del Precipizio (Cavern of the Precipice). In this hall, all the karst formations appear like natural sculptures.

Despite being subterranean worlds that seem uninhabited at first glance, the underground depths of the Castellana Caves actually host small crustaceans and bats, and generally a hidden but fascinating biodiversity. Expert guides will accompany you during the visit, narrating the geological history of Puglia and making the experience even more profound.

The guided tours, as mentioned, can range between two routes, from 1 kilometer to 3 kilometers, and are suitable for everyone, from experienced trekkers to families. The temperature is between 16° e 18° and requires a light jacket. The complete tour, which lasts about two hours, is for adventure lovers.

Furthermore, as stated, the Castellana Caves are located just a short distance from Alberobello, which, as we all know, is a UNESCO site thanks to its trulli. It is also very close to Polignano a Mare, for those seeking a different, more marine and beach-related experience. After the cave experience, you can then stop in one of these villages to fully enjoy Puglian life.
