Bossea Caves: a journey into the heart of the Maritime Alps

Autore: Redazione 26/08/2025 15:51

The Piedmontese Maritime Alps contain a true geological masterpiece in the Val Corsaglia at Frabosa Soprana. We are talking about the Bossea Caves, one of the most fascinating karst systems in Italy. It enchants visitors with stalactites, stalagmites, and underground rivers. It was Italy's first tourist cave, opened in 1874.

The caves extend for about three kilometers, while the tourist route covers only 900 meters through canyons, lakes—such as Lake Ernestina—and waterfalls, like the underground Mora stream. The majestic halls and calcareous concretions create surreal scenes, offering visitors a unique emotion.

Bossea is home to over 50 animal species, 10 of which are endemic. If you are arachnophobic, however, I don't recommend visiting this place. The Troglohyphantes Pedemontanus spider is one of the most common species. Furthermore, there are remains of bears in the caverns that lived there between 80,000 and 12,000 years ago, exhibited in the Sala del Tempio (Temple Hall). This adds a prehistoric and cultural touch to the caves, making them not just an unspoiled area, but also a journey into the past.

The adventure is accessible to all, with safe walkways and staircases, and lasts about 90 minutes. The constant temperature of 9°C requires warm clothing and non-slip shoes to ensure safety. The route is generally quite smooth and suitable for families, as well as all history enthusiasts.

The caves also host a speleological laboratory managed by the Polytechnic University of Turin and the CAI, which studies geological and biological phenomena. It is a natural art gallery, but it also houses a contemporary art gallery and hosts Christmas concerts, adding a unique cultural touch.

The Bossea Caves therefore offer an experience for everyone, in all seasons, and for all ages.
