Golfo di Orosei and Grotte del Bue Marino: the tales of the most secret Sardinia

Autore: Redazione 01/08/2025 09:23

Sardinia, in its easternmost area, hides one of the most fascinating underground treasures, among limestone cliffs, turquoise waters, and natural wonders. The Gulf of Orosei opens up like a fan, presenting the Grotta del Bue Marino (Cave of the Monk Seal), a stretch of coast that belongs to the territory of Barbagia and Ogliastra.

These are reachable only by sea or on foot, and they offer iconic beaches such as Cala Luna, Cala Mariolu, Cala Goloritzè, and Cala Sisine; they are ideal for those who love trekking or adventure, being reachable only by boat or through wild trails. However, there is a tourist section where you can access the Grotta del Bue Marino, so named because it once hosted the monk seal, which in Sardinian is called “Bue Marinu.”

The tourist access extends for about one kilometer, and looking around you can glimpse stalactites and stalagmites in every corner. Inside there is also a crystalline, beautiful, and surreal lake that creates plays of light and shadow. Legend has it that the Cave is secretly connected to Cala Luna through a submerged passage, and many speleologists in the past have attempted the feat of exploring submerged tunnels to find the connection.

These caves were indeed frequented by prehistoric men, and some rock graffiti testify to this little gem. The Gulf of Orosei is also a reference point for environmental conservation. The entire area is in fact included in the Gennargentu and Gulf of Orosei National Park.

This is the most beautiful, authentic, and poetic part of Sardinia; nature still reigns supreme here, unchallenged, and the trails themselves are an adventure and offer something that nothing else can equal.
