Gola di Caccaviola: the secret canyon hidden in the Matese

Autore: Redazione 01/08/2025 08:17

There are places known to few, where only a few have set foot. Hidden, silent, wild. The Gola di Caccaviola is one of them. In the Matese Regional Park, within the territory of Cusano Mutri, water has carved the rock for centuries. It has created a narrow, deep gorge, a landscape shaped by waterfalls, natural pools, and vertical walls covered with moss.

Getting there is not easy: it requires stamina, attention, and a strong desire for adventure. You need to start from the Forre di Lavello, follow the signs carefully, but once you arrive, the reward is worth it: a corner of pure nature. In certain points, the canyon narrows, forming cold green pools, with the water acting like a mirror. And there is silence: only the sound of water and the rustle of wind through the trees will accompany you. The views give a sense of peace that few things can match. The world stops for a moment: just man and nature, in contact, in a true paradise.

Many activities can be done here. Canyoning is possible, accompanied by expert guides. But don’t expect a tourist park: there are no bars or comfortable walkways. And that’s exactly the beauty of it: the Gola di Caccaviola is an authentic, living experience, where you can feel truly free. It’s a place that makes you feel small, yet part of something immense.

It is recommended to rely on external guides for safe exploration. By car, you can reach it from Benevento, heading towards Verreto Sannita and then Cusano Mutri. Parking is available near Lavello. Proper equipment is also advised: trekking shoes, water at hand, and a helmet for canyoning.
