Gola del Furlo (Furlo Gorge): the Marche wonder sculpted between nature, history, and legends

Autore: Redazione 01/08/2025 08:51

For those who love hiking, unspoiled nature, and the mysteries of the past, the Gola del Furlo State Nature Reserve is a true jewel modeled by time. In the heart of the Marche region, among the hills of the province of Pesaro and Urbino, this canyon, carved by time and part of the Central Apennines, is hidden, featuring vertical walls and breathtaking views. It is probably the most evocative place in the entire region.

The Via Flaminia, an ancient Roman road that is still passable, winds along the canyon and was fundamental for traffic between Rome and the Adriatic. The Furlo is one of the most iconic sections, which is the abbreviation of Forulus, meaning "small hole." It is, in fact, a tunnel carved by the Romans in the 1st century AD directly into the wall of the Gorge and is still visible and passable on foot. Walking through it means stepping into history, entering where Roman emperors and soldiers once marched. But in addition to the historical side, nature is also the mistress within the Gorge.

It has an area of about 3600 hectares, and its white limestone walls are reflected in the green waters of the river, creating a postcard-perfect scene. The path leading to the Testa del Duce (Mussolini's Head), an enormous rock structure commissioned during the fascist regime, is only visible from afar, and the reserve is crossed by these panoramic trails. This structure was built in the 1930s by directly sculpting the mountain with explosives and chisels and is a historical testimony incorporated into the landscape that tells of a somewhat peculiar past for those who seek history in the unexpected.

The Balza Forata is a panoramic point, a natural window in the rock that directly overlooks the canyon. There is no shortage of picnic areas and routes for families. The Gola del Furlo is therefore a place where the traces of history and the greenest nature coexist, providing a wonderful experience for those looking for something unique.
