Bletterbach Gorge: The Grand Canyon of South Tyrol

Autore: Redazione 01/08/2025 09:37

Trentino-Alto Adige, as is well known, offers some of the most spectacular places in Italy. Here there is a location that is even called the Grand Canyon of South Tyrol. This is the Bletterbach Gorge, one of the most extraordinary geological sites in Italy, and it is located among the woods and slopes of the village of Aldino.

It is an enormous fissure in the mountain, up to 400 meters deep, and it spans millions of years of Earth's history, having been patiently sculpted by water and time. The trails are well-marked, and accessible even for families and less experienced hikers, and traversing them means taking a journey back in time, where silence and nature reign supreme. It is also possible to take a guided tour with geologists and naturalists, who will reveal all the park's most hidden secrets.

There are numerous fossils of shells, remains of prehistoric plants, ancient seafloors, and, above all, traces of dinosaurs. In fact, there are many fossilized footprints, dating back more than 200 million years. Obviously, the Grand Canyon of South Tyrol does not only offer history and science, but also a nature that knows how to surprise, amidst waterfalls, sculpted walls, and rocks of a thousand colors.

The ideal starting point is the GEOPARC Bletterbach, which is a modern and interactive visitor center where one can discover the history of the Gorge. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site, as it is part of the Dolomites system, and here nature and culture, history and science coexist in a perfect mix that brings joy to those who decide to visit it.
