A new public art installation has been unveiled at Terminal 1 of Rome Fiumicino Airport: 108 black-and-white portraits covering a glass façade of more than 100 sqm at the departures entrance. The work conveys a message of peace and mutual respect among different peoples, ethnicities and religions.
The project is part of the international Inside Out Project, created by French artist JR to turn community photographs into large-scale public artworks. The portraits were shot by young photographers from Studio Kene during the international peace gathering organized by the Comunità di Sant'Egidio.
The installation places contemporary art at the service of a civic cause: fostering coexistence and countering hatred. It is intended for departing passengers as well as cultural visitors, reinforcing Leonardo da Vinci Airport's role as a public space for art and intercultural exchange.
The work is part of an ongoing cultural program at the airport that already features immersive installations, monumental sculptures and collaborations with archaeological institutions. This portrait project enhances the airport’s identity as a cultural hub beyond its transportation function.
Practical info: the installation is located at the entrance to Terminal 1 Departures and is visible in the transit area; it can be seen by passengers and visitors present in the airport spaces.
