Florence: Metropolitan Sunday — May 3, free admission to museums

On May 3, 2026, Metropolitan Sunday allows residents of the Florence Metropolitan Area free access to a number of museums and cultural sites. The program includes family activities, thematic routes, guided tours and openings of areas that are usually closed to the public.

Participating venues

  • Museo Novecento: children's activities, collection highlights and the major cycle dedicated to Georg Baselitz with a focus on Ottone Rosai.
  • Palazzo Medici Riccardi: free entrance and guided visits to normally inaccessible rooms, featuring exhibitions on Florentine déco.
  • Palazzo Vecchio: an animated route for families called "To build a city you need a flower" and Secret Routes for adult visitors.
  • Santa Maria Novella and the Brancacci Chapel: special openings and visits linked to current shows.
  • Mad Murate Art District: participatory sound installation "Keep it alive" that engages visitors in creating a soundscape.
  • Memorial of Deportations: openings and cultural programs connected to historical memory.

The Amir project also offers multicultural readings and heritage routes at venues such as Museo Novecento and Palazzo Vecchio. Temporary exhibitions on display include "Baselitz Avanti!" at Museo Novecento and "Firenze Déco" at Palazzo Medici Riccardi.

Practical information

Who is eligible: free admission is reserved for residents of the Florence Metropolitan Area; bring an identity document proving residency.

Timings and bookings: opening hours and access rules vary by venue. Check each museum's official website or communication channels in advance. Family activities and workshops may require prior booking or have limited places.

This is a good opportunity to explore usually inaccessible spaces and join tailored programs suitable for different audiences — all without an entrance fee.
