Ferrara seeks recognition as 'City of Established Ceramic Tradition'

The municipal council of Ferrara has started the process to apply to the Ministry for recognition as a "City of Established Ceramic Tradition". The initiative aims to highlight a deeply rooted but less celebrated aspect of the city's identity: workshops, studios and artisan practices linked to ceramics.

The administration says the goal is twofold: to strengthen the cultural bond with the city's artistic tradition and to create new opportunities for cultural and tourist attraction. The council's orientation is the first formal step; the next phase involves collecting the historical and production documentation needed for the application.

As explained by the commerce councillor Francesco Carità, the project stems from dialogue with trade associations and operators and will be developed through a working group including municipal culture and tourism offices and representatives of artistic craftsmanship.

Next steps and aims

  • Gathering historical and production materials for the ministerial application;
  • Setting up a working table between Culture, Tourism and craft representatives;
  • Promoting workshops and studios as elements of cultural and tourist appeal.

If successful, the recognition would allow Ferrara to join the Italian Association of Ceramic Cities, linking the city to a national network that promotes joint initiatives and greater visibility for local excellence.
