Italy's book market showed signs of recovery in the first quarter of 2026, with a +3.4% increase in value and +2.5% in copies sold. A €60 million fund established by the Culture Decree for library purchases played a key role.
The so-called library bonus finances book acquisitions, including digital titles, for state, regional/local and non-profit libraries. The measure prioritizes investments in peripheral and underserved areas to combat cultural "dryness" and broaden citizens' access to reading.
Industry sources report a widespread effect across physical and online channels, indicating that targeted public spending has stimulated both demand and supply. However, questions remain about the durability of the boost once funds are exhausted and whether longer-term policies will follow to consolidate growth.
The Minister of Culture, Alessandro Giuli, said the measure aligns with the Olivetti Plan and seeks to use culture as a lever for territorial cohesion and social renewal.
