Imagine walking through a golden desert where every step sinks into the soft, warm sand, while the infinite horizon is lost in golden waves that seem to breathe to the rhythm of the wind. You aren't in Africa, but on the Sardinian Costa Verde, where the Dune di Piscinas create one of the most surreal and magnetic panoramas in the Mediterranean, a place where nature has painted a picture impossible to forget.
Reaching this landscape miracle is an adventure that begins from Arbus, following the SP65 which winds through metalliferous hills and old abandoned mines. The last few kilometers of dirt road (caution for low-clearance vehicles) cross a lunar landscape where rusty mining towers stand like skeletons of Sardinia's industrial past. The sandy parking area among the dunes becomes the starting point for a total immersion into this unexpected Saharan dimension.
The first contact with the mountains of sand is electrifying. The impetuous Mistral wind continuously shapes these golden giants, which can reach sixty meters in height, creating sharp crests and sinuous valleys that change shape daily. Climbing the sandy slopes requires energy, but the panoramic reward from the top is indescribable: a sea of dunes that undulates to the horizon, where the deep blue of the sea merges with the blinding gold of the sand.
The dune ecosystem hides extraordinary botanical treasures. Juniper trees, twisted by the Mistral, cling bravely to the sandy slopes, while sea lilies sprout like white jewels among the pioneering vegetation. During the breeding season, Loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) emerge from the nocturnal waves to lay their eggs in this protected sand, transforming Piscinas into a marine sanctuary of international importance.
The wild beach bordering the dunes is an pristine paradise where crystalline waters caress the finest, unbroken sands for kilometers. The visual contrast between the deep green of the Mediterranean scrub, the vibrant gold of the dunes, and the shifting blue of the sea creates a spectacle that enchants the senses and nourishes the soul.
From Cagliari, the most scenic route follows the SS130 to Guspini, then the SP65 towards the coast (about 90 minutes). ARST buses connect Arbus with the main centers, while organized tours regularly depart from Cagliari and Oristano, allowing you to discover this marine desert that defies all known geography.
