Destination Lombards: a contemporary Grand Tour at Monte Sant’Angelo

Destination Lombards is a digital storytelling initiative linking seven stops of the serial UNESCO site “The Lombards in Italy. Places of Power (568–774 AD)”. The project highlights heritage through modern formats, including the Shrine of Saint Michael the Archangel at Monte Sant’Angelo.

Designed as a contemporary Grand Tour, five content creators specialized in history and art turn each location into a narrative station, producing reels, stories, photos and videos aimed at new and younger audiences.

Sites included in the serial UNESCO listing

  • Cividale del Friuli – Gastaldaga area and Lombard Small Temple
  • Brescia – Monastic complex of San Salvatore-Santa Giulia
  • Castelseprio – Basilica of San Giovanni Evangelista
  • Campello sul Clitunno – Temple of Clitunno
  • Spoleto – Basilica of San Salvatore
  • Benevento – Complex of Santa Sofia
  • Monte Sant’Angelo – Shrine of Saint Michael the Archangel

The creators and their assignments

  • Flavio Burni (Lo Storico) – Brescia
  • Daniela Tedone (La Storia per Ted) – Castelseprio
  • Erika Micheli (CadavErika Storica) – Campello sul Clitunno and Spoleto
  • Evelina Silvestroni – Benevento and Monte Sant’Angelo
  • Andrea Passador (Prolisso) – Cividale del Friuli

Why follow and practical tips

The initiative aims to make Lombard heritage approachable and engaging without oversimplifying historical complexity. Multimedia outputs are designed to offer coherent storytelling across the seven sites.

  • How to follow: watch reels, stories and posts from the participating creators on major social platforms for multimedia insights and live updates.
  • Visiting Monte Sant’Angelo: check opening hours and any scheduled religious or cultural events that could affect access to the Shrine of Saint Michael the Archangel.
  • For families and enthusiasts: the content serves as an accessible primer before an on-site visit and can enrich the visitor experience.

The project is backed by funding aimed at supporting UNESCO sites and seeks to reach broader audiences using contemporary communication styles while preserving historical accuracy.
