Southern side of the Colosseum refurbished: overview

The Parco Archeologico del Colosseo has completed a conservation and enhancement project on the southern side of the amphitheatre, a sector long affected by subsidence from alluvial ground. The initiative was carried out under the technical and scientific direction of the Parco, with design by architect and urban planner Stefano Boeri.

Excavations and restoration work have recovered ancient features and re-established the original walkway: a new travertine pavement sourced from Tivoli was installed, and visual elements recalling the sequence of ambulacula were placed where the former rows of pillars once stood.

• Materials: travertine paving from Tivoli for the reconstructed ancient walkway.
• Visual reconstruction: inserted elements that evoke the ambulacula sequence where structural pillars existed.
