Cycle Tourism in Italy: 49 million visits in 2025

The report "Traveling by Bike 2026", produced by Isnart-Unioncamere in collaboration with Legambiente and presented at the Cycle Tourism Fair in Padua, estimates about 49 million cycle tourism stays in Italy in 2025, generating an economic impact of approximately €6.4 billion for local areas.

The cyclist profile is changing: women, couples and younger travelers are increasing, and average daily spending is rising. Many visitors combine cycling with cultural visits and local food and wine experiences.

  • 2025 visits: 49 million.
  • Economic impact: €6.4 billion.
  • Composition: women represent about 47.1% of cycle tourists; Gen Z accounts for 17.3%.
  • Average daily spending: €69 for accommodation, €91 for other local purchases and services; €22 in restaurants and €10 on typical products.
  • Digital influence: 6 out of 10 cyclists decide online and 1 in 2 share their experience on social media.

The report also highlights a strengthening of bike rental and related services: while the number of companies is broadly stable, service points have increased, indicating a wider and more articulated local offering.

Implications for territories: cycle tourism acts as a catalyst for flows that enhance cultural heritage, gastronomy and local services. Competitive offers require integrated multi-product systems, dedicated infrastructure and policies that support local entrepreneurship, with attention to female inclusion and younger travelers.

Good practices: the study points to national and international examples that improve accessibility, distributed rental services and experiential routes—useful models for boosting the appeal of cycle routes and lesser-known areas.

Methodology: findings are based on over 30,000 interviews carried out by the Chambers of Commerce Tourism Economy Observatory, with a focused sample of more than 2,000 respondents who identified cycling as the main reason or primary activity of their trip.
