Sansepolcro's Former Tobacco Factory: Council Unanimously Approves Purchase

The Sansepolcro town council, meeting on 14 May 2026, voted unanimously to buy the portion of the former Tobacco Factory still owned by Cassa Depositi e Prestiti Immobiliare, returning the entire complex to the municipal patrimony.

• Planned cost: €250,000 plus taxes, for a total sum slightly above €300,000.
• Goal: convert the area into a multifunctional space open to the city, with public and cultural functions.
• Next steps: notarised contract signing and the launch of calls for expressions of interest on future uses.

Mayor Fabrizio Innocenti described the acquisition as "an operation that will remain in the annals of our Municipality," and emphasised the intent to pursue a participatory planning process. The resolution was approved with immediate effect.

The history of the former Factory includes nineteenth-century transformations and inclusion in redevelopment programmes since 2004. After prolonged negotiations with Fintecna and then Cassa Depositi e Prestiti, the property's return to municipal ownership paves the way for conservation, planning and targeted financing for recovery.
