'Che delizia Belfiore' — final phase of excavations in Ferrara

The project to research and rehabilitate the Delizia di Belfiore area has entered its final phase, officially announced on 13 April 2026. The initiative is led by the regional Superintendency together with the local archaeological group.

The site, roughly one and a half hectares and currently unused, lies between Via Santa Maria degli Angeli, Via Giacomo Leopardi and Via Orlando Furioso. It represents an important fragment of Ferrara's estense heritage that had not previously undergone systematic excavation.

Project aims

  • Archaeological research: stratigraphic investigations to document the layout and remains of the historic Delizia di Belfiore.
  • Training: engagement of local high schools through training programs that allow students to participate in fieldwork.
  • Community involvement: running the excavations as an open site to introduce citizens to archaeological practice.
  • Site enhancement: plans for redeveloping the area into a green archaeological park with educational uses.

How the work is organised

Field campaigns took place across 2022–2024 and now move into the concluding phase under Superintendency oversight, with professional archaeologists supporting the operations. Trained students and volunteer members of the archaeological group have worked alongside specialists, making the site an active learning environment.

Municipal funding has supported the initiative from the outset, reflecting the local administration's interest in investing in cultural identity, education and urban regeneration.

Significance

  • Recovering the Delizia di Belfiore restores an element of Ferrara's estense past to public awareness.
  • School and community participation fosters greater appreciation for cultural heritage and conservation.
  • The project serves as a model of collaboration between institutions, associations and citizens for creating quality public spaces.
