Castiglione del Lago in spring

Perched on a promontory on the western shore of Lake Trasimeno, Castiglione del Lago is one of Umbria's most picturesque villages. In spring the town comes alive with blooming landscapes and gentle light, perfect for outdoor exploration.

What to see

  • Rocca del Leone: the tower and ramparts provide wide views over the lake; the wall walk combines history with scenic vistas.
  • Palazzo della Corgna: a Renaissance residence with frescoed rooms that retain an authentic atmosphere.
  • Historic centre: stone alleys and medieval-to-Renaissance buildings along Corso Vittorio Emanuele, ideal for a slow, photographic stroll.
  • Lakeside and harbour: a different viewpoint on the Rocca and departure point for boats to the islands.
  • Islands of the Trasimeno (Isola Maggiore, Isola Polvese): boat trips, fishing hamlets, nature trails and local crafts.

Food and local products

The local cuisine highlights lake fish and inland Umbrian produce. Must-try dishes include carpa in porchetta, tegamaccio and recipes featuring eel and pike. Town restaurants typically offer traditional menus at reasonable prices.

Markets and local life

The weekly market (usually on Wednesday mornings) is a good chance to meet producers and buy olive oil, legumes, cheeses and preserves—ideal for a picnic by the lake or a boat trip.

Practical information

  • Location: province of Perugia, western shore of Lake Trasimeno.
  • Getting there: by car about 45 minutes from Perugia (A1 Valdichiana exit + SS75 bis); around 1.5 hours from Florence. The Castiglione del Lago station lies on the Florence–Rome line with direct connections.
  • Opening hours: the Rocca and Palazzo are open year-round with seasonal timetables; entrance fees may apply—check municipal or local cultural websites for updates.
  • Boat services: departures from Castiglione harbour; spring timetables generally start in April.
  • Parking: external parking areas outside the walls with pedestrian access to the centre.

When to visit and tips

April and May are the best months to visit: milder weather, flowering landscapes and fewer visitors. Plan half a day for the village and another half for island excursions or walks in the surrounding hills to make the most of your trip.

Practical tip

Wear comfortable shoes for gravel alleys and the wall walk, and check boat timetables in advance if you plan to visit the islands. Combine a market stop with a meal in a traditional trattoria to complete the village experience.
