Perched on a promontory on the western shore of Lake Trasimeno, Castiglione del Lago is one of Umbria's most picturesque villages. In spring the town comes alive with blooming landscapes and gentle light, perfect for outdoor exploration.
The local cuisine highlights lake fish and inland Umbrian produce. Must-try dishes include carpa in porchetta, tegamaccio and recipes featuring eel and pike. Town restaurants typically offer traditional menus at reasonable prices.
The weekly market (usually on Wednesday mornings) is a good chance to meet producers and buy olive oil, legumes, cheeses and preserves—ideal for a picnic by the lake or a boat trip.
April and May are the best months to visit: milder weather, flowering landscapes and fewer visitors. Plan half a day for the village and another half for island excursions or walks in the surrounding hills to make the most of your trip.
Wear comfortable shoes for gravel alleys and the wall walk, and check boat timetables in advance if you plan to visit the islands. Combine a market stop with a meal in a traditional trattoria to complete the village experience.
