History and description
Perched on a rocky cliff, the castle has uncertain origins, dating between 1139 and 1161, when, according to some sources, it was built by the Republic of Genoa. Always under Genoese control, it later underwent restructuring and, for a time, was even used as a prison before taking on its current role as a venue for events, exhibitions, and visits. The structure has a pentagonal layout, featuring a typical entrance with a drawbridge, the castellan’s house, and a series of bastions connected to the walls, once used for surveillance.
Curiosities
The castle was painted several times by Claude Monet under the title Le Château de Dolceacqua. These works are still often displayed in contemporary exhibitions held at the castle.
Access
Open daily except Mondays, the castle can be visited at the cost of €6, with additional fees for guided tours. Discounts and free entry are also available under specific conditions.
How to reach it
Dolceacqua can be reached by car via the SS Aurelia from Genoa, by train from La Spezia, or on foot from nearby Ligurian towns.
A blend of noble residence and military fortress, Doria Castle offers visitors a vivid glimpse into both the public and private life of the past, immersing them fully in history.
