Arechi Castle – between history and beauty

Autore: Redazione 02/08/2025 09:33

History and description

Originating from the construction of a Byzantine castrum in the 6th century, the castle was erected in the 8th century by Arechi II, the Lombard prince from whom it takes its name. His intent was to demonstrate his power by making Salerno an impregnable stronghold. Built with local dark stone blocks on Bonadies Hill, the castle underwent several expansions over the centuries until it was transformed into the summer residence of the Sanseverino princes. After the Unification of Italy, it was purchased by the Province of Salerno, which restored it and opened it to the public. Today, the fortress still preserves the turris maior from the Byzantine period and the “Bastiglia” tower, while inside it houses the Medieval Museum, rich in artifacts from aristocratic life, as well as a multimedia museum.

Curiosities

The Lombard prince who desired its construction chose Bonadies Hill not only for its strategic position but also because it is the first to be illuminated by the rising sun. The castle is also tied to numerous legends, according to which it is full of secret passages and haunted by many ghosts. Its mysterious charm was so strong that Ugo Foscolo set his tragedy Ricciarda here.

Access

Open from Tuesday to Saturday, the fortress is accessible at a price of €4–5, with reductions and specific free entry days. Admission includes access to the museum, the terrace, and the outdoor areas, where visitors can enjoy a beautiful panoramic view.

How to reach it

The castle can be reached by car via the A3 motorway toward Salerno, with free parking available nearby, by bus through local urban lines, or on foot starting from the Giardino della Minerva.

A place rich in history and beauty, visiting Arechi Castle is an essential experience to fully enjoy the wonders of Campania!
