You can hear them from afar, these waterfalls that bear a name that sounds like a promise. The Campanaro (Bell-ringer) truly resonates in the valleys of the Calabrian Aspromonte, but it's not the tolling of ancient bells that guides you to this hidden corner: it's the crystalline roar of water plunging from sixty meters high, bouncing off steps of pink granite that shine in the sun like precious gems.
The trail leading to the waterfalls winds through gigantic chestnut trees with gnarled trunks that tell tales of centuries of survived storms. The air here smells of fresh resin and wet earth, with that particular scent of decaying leaves that makes it feel like spring even in the middle of winter. As you walk, the sound of the water grows louder, a crescendo that makes your heart pound in anticipation of the spectacle awaiting you.
Then, suddenly, there they are: the three waterfalls follow one another like a giant's steps, creating natural pools of such an intense emerald green that they look artificial. The water descends fast and cold, creating a fine mist that smells of the mountains and freedom. All around, prehistoric ferns grow lushly on the damp boulders, while velvety mosses cover every surface, creating a brilliant green carpet that invites touch.
The first dive is a thermal shock that takes your breath away: the water is freezing even in high summer, but that sensation of pure coolness that penetrates to your bones is a natural drug that creates immediate addiction. The pools carved out by the force of the water are perfect for swimming, deep enough for courageous jumps yet small enough to feel embraced by the surrounding nature.
The sound here is hypnotic: the dull roar of the main waterfall mixes with the cheerful gurgling of the water flowing over the stones downstream, while small mountain birds chirp, hidden among the branches of the black alders that lean over the water like curious spectators.
On summer afternoons, when the sun filters through the dense vegetation, it creates plays of light and shadow that transform this natural amphitheater into a green cathedral where every drop of water becomes a prism that breaks down the light into a thousand colors. The echo of voices and laughter bounces off the rocky walls, creating a natural chorus that mixes with the eternal song of the water.
From Reggio Calabria, you reach them by following the signs for Mammola, then taking mountain roads that already smell of adventure. Bring your swimsuit, towels, and especially courage for dives into waters that will make you shout with surprise and joy. The trail requires sturdy shoes and an exploratory spirit, but the reward is worth every drop of sweat: here, you will rediscover that primitive contact with pure water that makes even the most skeptical people feel like children again.
