Theatrical Caravan 'Borghi in scena': performances and workshops across Calabrian villages

When: 8–10 May 2026. Where: various villages in the province of Reggio Calabria.

The "Borghi in scena – Theatrical Caravan" launches on 8 May. Conceived by Adexo Arti Creative in collaboration with Officine Jonike Arti and Calabria Dietro le Quinte APS, the project transforms historic centres and landscapes into stages for site-specific theatre and community workshops.

Main goals include enhancing architectural and cultural heritage, expanding cultural participation in internal areas and connecting myth, memory and contemporary issues through theatre.

• Participating towns: Aiello Calabro, Bova, Gallicianò (Confoduri), Gerace, Pentedattilo (Melito Porto Salvo), Portigliola, Gioiosa Ionica, Sant’Eufemia d’Aspromonte, Stilo.
• Venues: municipal theatres, squares, courtyards, archaeological sites and natural landscapes adapted as theatrical devices.

The programme features five main productions alternating across the stops:

• Morgana. Acque Libere (Adexo Arti Creative) – by and with Katia Colica.
• Alfa e Omega (Officine Jonike Arti) – with Maria Milasi and Domenico Loddo.
• Ecuba. Il sogno (Adexo Arti Creative) – with Katia Colica and Daniela D’Agostino.
• Medea: la lunga notte (Officine Jonike Arti) – adapted from Corrado Alvaro.
• La città del Sole: Ombre Lucenti – a site-specific performance inspired by Tommaso Campanella.

Alongside performances, a programme of workshops involves residents and visitors. Selected sessions include:

• 8 May – puppet-making workshop "Build a sock puppet" (Nina Theatre) in Sant’Eufemia d’Aspromonte and Gioiosa Ionica.
• 9 May – acting and stage makeup workshop "Villain characters: identity and construction" (Aiello Calabro).
• 30 May – circus arts workshop with Giocolereggio (Gerace).
• 31 May – comic theatre workshop with Gigi Miseferi (Pentedattilo).
• 5–6 June – dramaturgy workshop "Antigone Today" with Matteo Tarasco (Bova).
• 13 June – storytelling workshop with cantastorie Nino Racco (Gallicianò).
• 20 June – lyrical and musical theatre workshop with Accademia Senocrito (Portigliola).

Initial stops present concentrated programming: Aiello Calabro hosts Alfa e Omega on 8 May, the acting workshop on 9 May and Ecuba. Il sogno on 10 May. Sant’Eufemia d’Aspromonte and Gioiosa Ionica also feature shows and workshops starting 8 May.

The project is funded by PAC 2014–20 (Action 6.7.1) – Special Theatre Projects of the Calabria Region and aims to build lasting connections between artists, audiences and internal territories.
