Carnival of Cento 2026: tradition looking to the future

The Carnival of Cento is not simply a festival. It is a cultural phenomenon, an open-air creative workshop, a moving treatise on social satire, and, since 1993, an official "twin" of the colossal Rio de Janeiro Carnival. In its 2026 edition, this unique pairing – Emilian folk roots and Brazilian samba – will reach new heights, shaping a celebration that looks simultaneously to the past and the future, between entrenched tradition and spectacular innovation.

To understand the magic of the Cento Carnival, one must start from its oldest heart: the local mask, Tasi. Born in the 1700s as a crude, hot-blooded popular character, Tasi represents the irreverent and joyful spirit of the community. It is the common thread linking the modern parades to the "veglioni" (masked balls) of past centuries, held in the countryside and animated by plaster masks, which are still cult collectible items today. 2026 will celebrate this heritage with dedicated exhibitions, children's workshops on traditional plasterwork, and a "parade of historical masks," a moment of touching beauty that recalls the festival's popular, rustic origins.

However, it was after the Second World War that the event took its current form: the first allegorical floats made of papier-mâché, crafted with artisanal mastery in the sheds of the Float Builder Associations, began parading through the city streets. These floats are not just giant moving sculptures; they are satire, criticism, three-dimensional caricatures that lampoon power, politics, society, and figures from national and international news. Their direct and often startling message is the lifeblood of the Cento Carnival.

 

The Historic Twin Carnival: Rio's Samba in Emilia

The epochal turning point came in 1993 with the official twinning with the Rio de Janeiro Carnival. An agreement not only symbolic but one of vital exchange: the best samba schools from Rio bring to Cento an explosion of feathers, sequins, rhythm, and dancing bodies; the master float builders from Cento fly to Rio to teach papier-mâché techniques. This exchange elevated the Cento Carnival to international status. In 2026, the presence of one of the most prestigious samba schools, like Mangueira or Vila Isabel, is expected, transforming Corso Guercino into an explosion of color and infectious rhythm. The theme of the Brazilian parade often engages in a dialogue with the Italian one, creating a fascinating counterpoint between cultures.

 

 

 

 

 

The Pillars of 2026: Parade, Token Toss, and Mask Award

The main event remains the Grand Parade of Allegorical Floats, which unfolds over two consecutive Sundays (presumably late February/early March 2026). On floats up to 20 meters tall, animated by complex movements and populated by hundreds of costumed performers, the year's themes will come to life. What will we see in 2026? Political satire will likely be dominated by figures emerging from the 2024-25 European and national elections. Hot topics of the day – from artificial intelligence to the ecological transition, from new frontiers in space to social issues – will be tackled with the typical sharp yet never malicious irony of Centese papier-mâché. Each float is a collective work of art, the result of months of work by volunteers, artists, metalworkers, and technologists.

A unique and participatory moment is the "Gettone" (Token Toss). Performers on the floats and grandstands toss thousands of numbered tokens into the crowd, which can be won in prize draws. But the most famous toss is that of "La Maschera d'Oro" (The Golden Mask), the award for the best float. A panel of experts awards the trophy, but the atmosphere created at the moment of the announcement, with the ecstatic crowd, is unforgettable.

 

 

Innovation and Sustainability: the Carnival of the future

The 2026 edition promises to be a laboratory of innovation. Technology is now an integral part of the spectacle: synchronized pyrotechnic effects, video mapping enveloping the floats, next-generation LED lighting, and perhaps even holograms or app-based interactions with the audience. The challenge is integrating these elements without distorting the craftsmanship of the papier-mâché.

Another crucial theme is sustainability. The Float Builder Associations are already working to reduce environmental impact: the use of non-toxic, biodegradable glues and paints, employment of recycled materials for structures, low-energy lighting systems, and plans for post-parade recycling of papier-mâché. In 2026, we might witness the first "zero-impact float," a powerful message in tune with the times.

 

 

Experiencing the Carnival: a total experience
 

Experiencing the Cento Carnival goes beyond the parade. It's an experience that involves all the senses. In the preceding days, the city comes alive with side events: masked dinners, concerts, street theater performances, tastings of typical Emilian products (like tortellini and crescentini). Restaurants and taverns offer themed menus. The squares become stages for bands and artists. It is a community celebration, which welcomes tourists with open arms, transforming them for a few days into temporary citizens of "Little Rio of Italy."

The Cento Carnival 2026 will thus present itself as a perfect synthesis of its identity. It will be the festival of Tasi, who still brings his hearty laugh from the countryside. It will be the showcase of Italian artisanal mastery, capable of turning strips of newspaper and plaster into satirical giants. It will be the Brazilian night, where the Emilian cold melts in the heat of samba. And it will be a glimpse of the future, where tradition and innovation, art and technology, merge to tell the story of our era.

Taking part in the Cento Carnival in 2026 doesn't just mean attending a parade. It means being thrust into a whirlwind of creativity, being part of a centuries-old story, and, for a moment, seeing the world – with all its contradictions and beauties – parade before your eyes, transformed into a collective dream of papier-mâché, music, and color. A dream that, once a year, becomes wonderfully real.
