Capo Vaticano: the terrace over the Tyrrhenian where the sea becomes legend

Autore: Redazione 01/08/2025 08:14

Wild nature, open views of the Aeolian Islands, and local culture come together along a curve of the Calabrian coast, where a true wonder hides: Capo Vaticano. This promontory is located in the municipality of Ricadi, in the province of Vibo Valentia, and is considered one of Italy’s most beautiful beaches, overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea.

The name “Capo Vaticano” already hints at its past: it was a sacred site for the Greeks, where priests would watch the future from these cliffs, like looking through a window onto the gods. Today, the view is simpler but equally spectacular, made of beaches and pristine coves.

The most famous beach is undoubtedly Grotticelle Beach, a strip of white sand reachable on foot via trails or by shuttles departing from nearby resorts and B&Bs. The shallow sandy seabed and crystal-clear water make it perfect for snorkeling enthusiasts.

Capo Vaticano also offers one of the most spectacular viewpoints in Calabria, ideal for those seeking silence and peace. On clear days, Stromboli, Vulcano, and the other Aeolian Islands are visible across the calm sea.

For food lovers, the red onion of Tropea is grown here and is a local specialty. The regional cuisine is an explosion of bold flavors, featuring grilled swordfish, artisanal tuna in oil, ’nduja, and fresh or sweet-and-sour vegetables from local gardens.

By car, Capo Vaticano is just 10 km from Tropea, following the signs to Ricadi. By train, there is a stop at Ricadi on the Lamezia–Reggio Calabria line. Hikers and cyclists can explore scenic trails connecting Capo Vaticano with Tropea.
