The Calendimaggio festival in Assisi returns in 2026, from 6 to 9 May, reaffirming its status as one of Italy’s most fascinating historical re-enactments. The event celebrates the arrival of spring and has its roots in ancient medieval festivals, created to mark the end of winter with music, dancing and moments of conviviality. Officially established in 1954, the event aims to preserve and promote local traditions, and over the years has become an occasion capable of attracting thousands of visitors.
At the heart of the festival is the rivalry between the town’s two factions, Parte de Sopra and Parte de Sotto, who compete through costumed parades, theatrical performances, musical displays and evocative historical re-enactments. Over the four days, the historic centre is transformed into an authentic medieval setting, brought to life by re-enactors, artisans, flag-wavers and traditional food stalls.
Among the most eagerly awaited moments are the evening performances and the jury’s final verdict, which awards the prize to the winning faction. The event is partly free, whilst the main shows require an admission fee. Easily accessible, Assisi thus offers a unique immersive experience of Umbrian history and culture.
