Cagli files appeal to the TAR after the Municipal Theatre is excluded from the UNESCO nomination

The Municipality of Cagli has lodged an appeal with the Marche Regional Administrative Court against regional council resolution no. 1867 of 3 December 2024, which removed the Municipal Theatre from the list of 18 theatres proposed for the "System of Italian-style condomium theatres in central Italy between the 18th and 19th centuries" inscribed in the UNESCO nomination.

  • Who was notified: the appeal was served to the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry's legal office and the legal office of the Marche Region.
  • Municipality's claim: the administration challenges the decision as procedurally illegitimate; it has engaged legal counsel and reviewed the official reasons recently provided.
  • Historical issue: an arbitrary chronological cutoff of 1875 may have led to the exclusion: construction began in 1871 while the theatre was inaugurated in 1878.
  • Local response: broad civic mobilization with a petition exceeding 15,000 signatures; legal costs estimated above €11,000.

The Municipality says it will observe legal notice periods before disclosing full details, and that further public updates will follow once procedural steps are completed.
