In the Cuneo area, culture also passes through small mountain municipalities
A reworking of ISTAT data by the foundation Openpolis portrays the province of Cuneo as rich in cultural institutions: from ecomuseums to spaces devoted to Occitan traditions, the network extends into alpine valleys and peripheral municipalities.
However, notable differences emerge between urban centres and inner areas regarding seasonal openings and youth participation. In 2022 Piedmont recorded 44.4% cultural participation among children and adolescents aged 6–17, but a dense presence of museums does not automatically ensure continuous access to culture.
- Distribution: many museums are located in small mountain towns; the ranking of museums per 10,000 under-18 residents places Bellino, Caprauna and Argentera at the top.
- Opening days: nationally about 39% of museums were open more than 250 days a year; in inner areas the share drops to just over 30%.
- Accessibility and schools: partnerships with educational institutions remain relatively limited, with some exceptions in the province (Vinadio, Clavesana, Magliano Alfieri, Manta, Mondovì, Savigliano, Bene Vagienna, Bra, Alba, Prazzo and Chiusa Pesio).
The picture highlights strengths—a widespread cultural network and presence in mountain communities—but also challenges: ensuring more stable opening schedules, improving accessibility and strengthening ties with schools to increase youth access.
