Mesola Forest: the last forest of red deer

Autore: Redazione 22/08/2025 20:21

In the province of Ferrara, at the northeastern tip of Emilia-Romagna, lies a natural area of rare beauty, where the native population of Italian red deer still survives. We are talking about the Mesola Forest, a natural area that is now a unique wildlife heritage site.

The forest covers an area of over 1,000 hectares and walking through it gives you the feeling of entering a primordial world. It is protected as a nature reserve and is located within the Po Delta Park. Your steps along the paths, surrounded by silence, will be interrupted only by the rustling of leaves and the footsteps of the animals around you.

The colors change with each season, as oak, holm oak, and ash trees alternate with clearings, wetlands, and fossil dunes. As mentioned, the Italian red deer still lives here. The Mesola deer is very famous and is the undisputed symbol of the reserve. It lives here in a population of a few hundred specimens and is an elegant and fragile species.

It is a rare thrill to spot them, as they are quite unusual. In addition to deer, the fauna includes fallow deer, foxes, hares, and badgers. Be careful, though, as the ecosystem is very fragile. The hiking trails are designed to ensure respectful contact with the environment. The trails are always marked, and the cycle paths and observation areas allow visitors to avoid disturbing the native animal populations.

As you climb higher and higher, you will find panoramic viewpoints from which you can observe the Po Delta. The Mesola Forest was created in the Etruscan era as a hunting reserve and therefore also preserves historical evidence, as well as being a natural oasis of rare beauty. Today, it is one of the most precious lowland forest areas in Italy and a rare example of a nature reserve that has resisted urbanization.

Visiting the Mesola Forest means slowing down, listening to the sounds and rediscovering a deep connection with the earth. It means immersing yourself in an authentic experience in the heart of the noble deer, the undisputed symbols of the park.
