Bay of the Turks: the hidden jewel of Salento that resists time

Autore: Redazione 01/08/2025 09:17

A few steps from Otranto, in the heart of Salento, a small paradise opens up that seems suspended between legend and unspoiled nature: the Baia dei Turchi. It is just a strip of white sand, but its peculiarity is that it is nestled between the turquoise sea and a dense Mediterranean pine forest, where the scent of pines and the sound of the sea merge, liberating those who visit it.

The name is not born from chance, but from a historical fact. Legend has it that it was right here, in 1480, that the Ottoman troops landed to besiege Otranto. Yet no one would ever associate the Baia dei Turchi with wars and violence. On the contrary, it is a refuge of peace, far from noise and chaos. The water is clear, calm, with a thousand shades of blue, and the sand is light, with low dunes and spontaneous vegetation.

The bay is protected for its biodiversity within the Alimini Lakes Oasis (Oasi dei Laghi Alimini). In this area, there are no beach establishments, but only small equipped stretches and long free spaces. The area is perfect for those who love a wild yet accessible sea, because a beautiful sea is also a free sea. In summer, access is regulated: it is, in fact, one of the few Apulian beaches where nature still has a voice.

The Baia dei Turchi is for those seeking a true connection with the landscape, with nature, far from the concrete and confusion of metropolises. Every moment of the day has its own light: in the morning the water is crystalline and calm, in the afternoon the sun lights up the pine forest, flooding the bay with vibrant colors. Although it is close to stunning places like Otranto, Alimini, and Torre dell'Orso, it preserves a more intimate soul, for those seeking a different experience.

From Otranto, take the coastal road north for about 5 km, following the signs for "Baia dei Turchi." You park in one of the paid (even guarded) parking lots, then you continue on foot for about 10 minutes through paths immersed in the pine forest.
