Restoration begins at Sammezzano Castle: museum plan and park revival

Autore: Redazione 13/04/2026 18:24

Sammezzano’s revival: what’s happening

Located in Leccio, Reggello (Florence), Sammezzano Castle is undergoing a recovery program after decades of deterioration. Following the acquisition in spring 2025, authorities and new managers have launched structural and conservation works aimed at reopening the piano nobile as a museum and establishing a sustainable long-term management model.

Works underway and main priorities

The initial phase focuses on urgent interventions: repairing the roof to stop leaks, protecting decorated interiors, removing invasive vegetation and installing surveillance systems. The plan also includes demolishing a large modern concrete structure considered out of keeping with the historic landscape.

  • Roof repairs to safeguard interior decorations;
  • Interior protection and consolidation for the monumental rooms;
  • Park restoration and care of significant trees, including the towering sequoias;
  • Removal of the incompatible modern structure affecting the site’s historic setting.

Visiting: timing and expectations

At present, the castle is not open for general visits. The project aims to open the piano nobile as a public museum and combine cultural activities with hospitality and events to ensure financial sustainability. Public access is planned to return gradually over the coming years, with guided or scheduled visits likely during less intrusive phases of the restoration.

Why the project matters for the local area

Sammezzano is both an architectural jewel and a cultural landscape. Its recovery could boost cultural tourism, local employment and season extension in the Valdarno and broader Tuscany. Civic engagement and past campaigns have kept public attention on the site, supporting a shared approach to conservation.

Practical tips to follow progress

  • Check updates on opening dates and available tours: access could be restricted while work continues;
  • Reaching Sammezzano: Leccio (Reggello) is accessible by local roads; consider public transport and event shuttles for organized visits;
  • Early public access will likely include guided tours focused on key rooms (Peacock Room, White Room, Stalactite Corridor) and the historic park.

Note: a foundation will oversee the restoration, museum operations and complementary activities aimed at ensuring the long-term economic viability of the complex.
