Located in Leccio, Reggello (Florence), Sammezzano Castle is undergoing a recovery program after decades of deterioration. Following the acquisition in spring 2025, authorities and new managers have launched structural and conservation works aimed at reopening the piano nobile as a museum and establishing a sustainable long-term management model.
The initial phase focuses on urgent interventions: repairing the roof to stop leaks, protecting decorated interiors, removing invasive vegetation and installing surveillance systems. The plan also includes demolishing a large modern concrete structure considered out of keeping with the historic landscape.
At present, the castle is not open for general visits. The project aims to open the piano nobile as a public museum and combine cultural activities with hospitality and events to ensure financial sustainability. Public access is planned to return gradually over the coming years, with guided or scheduled visits likely during less intrusive phases of the restoration.
Sammezzano is both an architectural jewel and a cultural landscape. Its recovery could boost cultural tourism, local employment and season extension in the Valdarno and broader Tuscany. Civic engagement and past campaigns have kept public attention on the site, supporting a shared approach to conservation.
Note: a foundation will oversee the restoration, museum operations and complementary activities aimed at ensuring the long-term economic viability of the complex.
