History and description
Founded between the late 8th and early 7th centuries BC by the Phoenicians, Nora is considered the oldest city in Sardinia. After the Roman conquest in the 3rd century BC, it was enriched with a forum, an aqueduct, and above all, the island’s only Roman theater. Later abandoned, it became the subject of systematic archaeological excavations, which brought to light residential complexes, Roman baths with mosaic floors, the Phoenician necropolis, the sanctuary of Aesculapius, and the Coltellazzo Tower.
Curiosities
Within the site, the so-called Stele of Nora was discovered, considered the oldest written testimony of the name “Sardinia” in the Phoenician alphabet.
Access
Open daily with seasonal hours, the site can be visited at the cost of €8, with reductions and free entry on specific occasions.
How to reach it
Located on the promontory of Capo di Pula, the area can be reached by bus or bicycle, though it is most convenient to go by car via the SS195 state road.
A true gateway to the past and a symbol of cultural stratification due to the many dominations over the centuries, the Archaeological Area of Nora is an unmissable stop for discovering the wonders of Sardinia.
