Archives and VIVE join forces: research, conservation and a Piero di

Archives and VIVE combine expertise for cultural heritage

In Rome the Direzione generale Archivi (General Directorate of Archives) of the Ministry of Culture and VIVE (Vittoriano and Palazzo Venezia) have formalized a collaboration centered on research, conservation and promotion of archival and artistic heritage. Announced on 8 April 2026, the agreement aims to create a dialogue between archival documents and artworks to make historical sources more accessible to a wider public.

• Research: combining archival expertise with exhibition and outreach capacities.
• Conservation: joint interventions on archival materials and artworks.
• Promotion: exhibition programs that bring documents out of storage and integrate them into historical and artistic narratives.

The first tangible result is the exhibition La Maddalena di Piero di Cosimo, hosted at VIVE and designed to juxtapose the painting with contracts, documents and records tracing the work's history. The exhibition opens to the public on 17 April 2026.

The initiative is proposed as a potential model for making Italy's vast archival heritage more visible, though its long-term impact will depend on the continuity and sustainability of the collaborative programme.
