On 10 May 2026 the rural Church of San Silvestro in Villa Scorciosa, Fossacesia, will be open to the public for guided visits as part of the 32nd edition of Chiese Aperte. The event, promoted by the Archeoclub of Lanciano, highlights the area's historical, artistic and spiritual heritage.
The church likely originated as an 11th-century Benedictine site and retains Romanesque features alongside Gothic-Cistercian traces. An ancient fresco behind the altar remains visible, contributing to the site's contemplative, Franciscan atmosphere.
The initiative is held with the patronage of the Municipality of Fossacesia and in collaboration with ScorciosART Aps and the parish of San Silvestro. It is linked to the 800th anniversary of Saint Francis's death and supports the promotion of the Cammino della Pace, a Franciscan pilgrimage route crossing notable sites in Abruzzo.
Guides will present the church's history, the medieval complex of Villa Scorciosa and the site's role in the local religious tradition. The visit is suitable for those interested in medieval history, religious art and spiritual heritage.
