Intimate Unthinkables: Su Liu Shiming at Palazzo Mora

From 9 May to 22 November 2026, Palazzo Mora in Venice hosts the two-person exhibition Intimate Unthinkables, held alongside the 61st International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale. The show stages a dialogue between Chinese sculptor Su Liu Shiming and contemporary artist Adrian Elisheva Parr Zaretsky.

Why visit

The exhibition investigates intimacy as an artistic theme, showing how everyday gestures and small bonds become tools for collective reflection. Juxtaposing sculpture with works on paper and canvas highlights emotional affinities across different scales and media.

About Su Liu Shiming

  • Chinese sculptor (1926–2010), born in Tianjin and trained at the Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA) in Beijing.
  • He blended Chinese tradition with French modernist principles, shaping modern sculpture in China.
  • His works—often depicting couples, families and workers—are held in international collections.

Exhibition structure

By placing sculptures alongside drawings and paintings, the show frames tenderness not as sentimentality but as a form of cultural agency: a subtle counter-narrative to division and distance. Works on paper and canvas—made with watercolor, pencil, pastel and earth—explore vulnerability, attachment and resilience.
