On 9 May 2026 the site-specific installation Love Difference – Mar Mediterraneo by Michelangelo Pistoletto was inaugurated in Matera. The work is installed in the Complesso Rupestre di Madonna delle Virtù e San Nicola dei Greci and is part of the Matera 2026 – Mediterranean Capital of Culture and Dialogue programme.
During the press presentation curator Mariadelaide Cuozzo (Professor of Contemporary Art History) explained the concept: a large communal table surrounded by chairs and rugs from Mediterranean countries, intended as a symbol of unity, dialogue and peace. The installation's mirrored surfaces reflect and multiply faces and landscapes, actively involving visitors in the artwork's meaning.
Speakers at the opening included Enrico Filippucci (artistic director of Opera Arte e Arti), Francesco Saverio Teruzzi (Fondazione Pistoletto) and institutional representatives such as Mayor Antonio Nicoletti and Cultural Councillor Simona Orsi. Michelangelo Pistoletto addressed attendees via a recorded message highlighting his idea of a Mediterranean Cultural Parliament, where differences are resources.
The evening closed with a musical contribution by Navid Zandaveh and Adriano Forina (Vivaverdi/ARTEria project), accompanying visitors around the central table.
Love Difference – Mar Mediterraneo offers an artistic and civic reflection on the Mediterranean: an invitation to sit together, listen and appreciate the richness of cultural differences along its shores.
