Villandro Alm: the high plateau suspended between sky and silence

Autore: Redazione 01/08/2025 09:36

For those seeking purest air and absolute tranquility, the Villandro Alm (Alpe di Villandro) is one of the most fascinating and less-traveled mountain pastures in Trentino-Alto Adige/South Tyrol. It overlooks the Isarco Valley and is surrounded by the peaks of the Dolomites; it is a true natural balcony that offers spectacular views of the Odle (Geisler Group), Sassolungo (Langkofel), Sciliat (Schlern), and even the Ortles massif. The trails are very simple to follow, suitable for all ages, and are therefore destinations for less experienced hikers.

The route leading to Monte Villandro, which is 2,509 meters high, is certainly the most iconic itinerary on the entire Alm, and its panoramic summit allows for a view of all the colorful alpine flowers, especially in summer. Along the paths, there are numerous mountain huts (malghe) and refuges where you can sample the many local culinary specialties. The Gasser Alm is highly appreciated for its authentic atmosphere and traditional dishes. The Villandro Alm also features many summit crosses, and in fact, you breathe an air of spirituality as well as history. The Totensee (Dead Lake) is a small alpine lake linked to many local legends, and furthermore, within the Alm, there are ancient traces of old salt and metal mines. In winter, gatherings are common for those looking for snowshoeing or cross-country skiing with groomed trails and routes that descend to form a postcard view.

It is probably the most intimate and sincere experience one can have in South Tyrol. It is an experience of silence where the South Tyrolean soul is highlighted in its purest conception.
