Ciociaria is a fascinating region in central Italy, rich in evocative landscapes and ancient villages. It’s the perfect destination for those seeking a peaceful vacation immersed in nature. Between medieval towns, castles, thermal baths, natural wonders, and traditional cuisine, this area offers an authentic journey through time and culture.
Where is Ciociaria?
Ciociaria is a historic and cultural region of central Italy, located between Lazio and Campania. Though it’s not an official administrative region, it includes the municipalities of the province of Frosinone and has a strong cultural identity.
Its name comes from the ciocie, traditional leather sandals once worn by local shepherds and peasants — so typical that the land became known as the “Terra delle Ciocie,” or Land of the Ciocie.
This territory has given birth to many notable figures, such as Nino Manfredi, Marcello Mastroianni, and Cicero, born in Arpino — just to name a few among many personalities from politics, art, literature, and journalism.
The most beautiful medieval villages
Ciociaria is a treasure trove of history and culture, dotted with enchanting medieval villages — each with its own story to tell.
Anagni – Known as the “City of Popes,” it was once a papal seat in the 13th century. Its Cathedral of Santa Maria boasts one of Italy’s most beautiful medieval crypts, with extraordinary frescoes. The stone alleys, noble palaces, and panoramic views give Anagni a timeless charm.
Arpino – One of the most famous towns in the area, perched 450 meters above sea level with views over the Liri Valley. Its labyrinthine old center is filled with historical monuments, such as the Cathedral of Santa Maria di Civita, the Church of San Michele, and the Borgia Tower.
Fumone – A fortified hilltop village at 766 meters above sea level, home to the Rocca di Fumone, an ancient Roman fortress later used as a prison for Pope Celestine V. Today, it houses the Civic Archaeological and Historical Museum.
Isola del Liri – Unique for its geography, the town is divided by the Liri River, forming a natural island with a spectacular waterfall in the center. The Boncompagni-Viscogliosi Castle and its civic museum make it one of the most picturesque sites in Lazio.
Alatri – Famous for its Cyclopean acropolis dating back to the 4th century BC, it’s a must-see for lovers of archaeology and medieval architecture.
Veroli – Perched on a hill, it’s known for its medieval alleys, noble palaces, and proximity to natural parks like the Simbruini Mountains and the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park. It’s also a stop on the Via Francigena, the historic pilgrimage route from Canterbury to Rome.
