From 28 March to 29 April Magazzino Muse in Ancona hosts a solo exhibition by sculptor and artist Alessandro Piano. The show evokes the playful spirit of the 1980s and 1990s through works that transform toys into contemporary art pieces: sculptures, prints, rugs and lamps crafted with resin techniques.
Piano works primarily with resin to create pieces that sit between sculpture and design. The "Alter Ego" series is produced through multiple resin pours: the technique requires careful timing, often waiting around 10 hours between pours. The outcome are objects that blend nostalgia with forward-looking design, reimagining toys and everyday items as new visual prototypes.
The exhibition centres on play as a means of social connection and creativity: the installations emphasise play's role in fostering collaboration, problem-solving and a slower, reflective pace of life. Starting from his personal collection of childhood objects, the artist invites visitors to reconsider the cultural and formative importance of play.
Originally from Genoa, Piano has revealed a recent discovery of kinship with architect Renzo Piano. He is also developing an "Alter Ego" piece dedicated to the city of Ancona, which was selected as the Italian Capital of Culture 2028.
This exhibition is recommended for those interested in contemporary intersections between art and everyday objects, with a special focus on design and collective memory.
