Palazzo Pepoli presents a photographic exhibition that investigates Frida Kahlo as a visual project: not a straightforward biography, but a study of the images that helped forge her myth. Around 70 original photographs by prominent twentieth-century photographers are on display, documenting different phases of the artist's life.
The selection juxtaposes self-portraits, portraits made by friends and peers, and archival materials. The aim is to show how visual elements — clothing, hairstyles, personal objects, poses — were employed by Kahlo as means of communication and self-fashioning. Photography becomes a tool to explore identity formation: personal, political and mediated.
The show includes images by important figures in twentieth-century photography who captured the artist in both private and public settings. The works reveal intimate and staged representations that together form a layered portrait.
