Frida Kahlo. The Gaze as Identity — photographic exhibition in Bologna

Palazzo Pepoli presents a photographic exhibition that investigates Frida Kahlo as a visual project: not a straightforward biography, but a study of the images that helped forge her myth. Around 70 original photographs by prominent twentieth-century photographers are on display, documenting different phases of the artist's life.

Exhibition focus

The selection juxtaposes self-portraits, portraits made by friends and peers, and archival materials. The aim is to show how visual elements — clothing, hairstyles, personal objects, poses — were employed by Kahlo as means of communication and self-fashioning. Photography becomes a tool to explore identity formation: personal, political and mediated.

Photographers and works on display

The show includes images by important figures in twentieth-century photography who captured the artist in both private and public settings. The works reveal intimate and staged representations that together form a layered portrait.

  • Self-portraits and portraits that document private dimensions
  • Photographs taken by friends, scholars and professional photographers
  • Archival items that attest to the intentional construction of a public image

Why see it

  • Historical insight: the exhibition provides documentary readings of Frida beyond her legend.
  • Visual perspective: it focuses on photography as an instrument of identity-making.
  • Curatorial approach: a pathway designed to relate diverse images and pose questions about authenticity and performance.
