Archaeological investigations in the Valley of the Temples have resumed, concentrating on the second residential quarter north of the Sacred Way. The current phase targets House VIIB, a classical-period dwelling that shows evidence of destruction linked to the Carthaginian siege in the 5th century B.C.
The excavation provides a direct view into domestic organization in the 5th century B.C. Researchers will study mudbrick construction techniques, room layout — including an andron used for banquets and symposia — and indications of an upper floor possibly associated with private, female spaces.
Previous interventions in the area uncovered important finds shedding light on religious and everyday practices, such as votive deposits containing figurines and small ritual vessels used in house-closure rites. These discoveries contribute valuable evidence for interpreting household cult and daily routines.
The dig will follow a public archaeology approach: the excavation area will be accessible to visitors with guided tours, hands-on workshops and demonstrations of experimental archaeology, focusing on ancient earth-building techniques and material analyses.
Visitors interested in following the project can consult the archaeological park for updated information on schedules and participation rules. This research phase aims to restore not only architectural remains but also the lived experience of Akragas' inhabitants.
