"A Tapestry for Peace" engages students at Palazzo San Giorgio Gallery

On the morning of 28 March 2026, the Palazzo San Giorgio Gallery hosted the event "A Tapestry for Peace", organised by Udi (Union of Italian Women) as part of the national network "10-100-1000 squares of women for peace". Due to bad weather the gathering moved indoors, attracting a notable turnout of pupils and local residents.

What participants created

Students actively contributed to a collective tapestry, adding drawings, words and symbols. The individual panels stitched together formed a visual route reflecting multiple perspectives on peace — a participatory artwork that blends different languages and expressions.

Purpose and symbolic meaning

The action is part of a broader national movement against war and rearmament policies, aimed at promoting a culture of disarmament and peaceful coexistence. The act of weaving was emphasised as a symbolic gesture of unity and care, countering destruction and division.

Participants and collaborators

  • Local Udi representatives and the national network coordinators
  • Municipal officials, including representatives for education and equal opportunities
  • School leaders and classes from ITT "Panella - Vallauri" (Fashion System and Graphics), the "Telesio - Montalbetti" Comprehensive Institute, and the "T. Campanella - Mattia Preti - Frangipane" High School
  • Local groups, including a musical ensemble and the neighbourhood committee

Organisers thanked those who provided logistical and artistic support and the schools that enabled active student participation.

Next steps

The tapestry, still being completed, will be finalised in the coming weeks and combined with works from across Italy for a national gathering scheduled in Rome in June. The initiative will also be repeated locally to broaden community involvement.

Practical information: the event took place in the Palazzo San Giorgio Gallery in Reggio Calabria; for updates on future local editions check official municipal and organisers' channels.
