Holy Week in villages: rites, processions and local flavors

In many of Italy's small historic towns Holy Week preserves a tapestry of rituals and customs closely tied to community life. Narrow streets and squares host processions, Passion reenactments and ceremonies that vary by location, offering visitors a blend of devotion, memory and powerful visual scenes.

Ceriana (Liguria): horns, tabulae and frisciöi

Ceriana keeps alive ancient musical and vocal traditions. During Holy Week you can hear horns made from chestnut bark and tabulae, wooden slats struck in time, accompanying the historic confraternities. Social moments are also important: the local frisciöi, simple savory fritters, are prepared and shared by residents.

Gromo (Lombardy): oil-lamps, "bocconi" and the maiassa

In the Seriana Valley, Gromo preserves striking symbolic practices such as handmade oil-lamps and the lighting of buckets called "bocconi" attached to crosses, creating powerful nocturnal spectacles. The Good Friday procession, featuring multiple crucifixes and the carrying of the Christ statue by 33-year-olds, is followed by the communal sharing of the maiassa, a traditional corn-flour cake with dried fruit.

Badolato (Calabria): the Mysteries, penitents and cuzzupe

On the Ionian coast, Badolato stages one of the most intense popular expressions of Holy Week. The Procession of the Dolorous Mysteries involves hundreds of participants reenacting the Passion with deep emotion. Notable features include hooded penitents known as disciplinari and ritual exchanges between confraternities; Easter Sunday is celebrated with the theatrical Cumprùnta. Typical Easter sweets here are cuzzupe, braided breads often decorated with hard-boiled eggs symbolizing rebirth.

Pescocostanzo (Abruzzo): confraternities, psalms and scarselle

Pescocostanzo's observances centre on liturgical singing: Lauds, Miserere and Psalms mark the sacred days. Good Friday features two processions—a morning visit to the Sepulchres and an evening march with the statue of the dead Christ—while confraternity members wear traditional robes. Don't miss local pastries such as the festive scarselle.

Practical tips for visitors

  • Check schedules: procession times and routes can change; consult local notices or tourist offices.
  • Show respect: many events are religious observances—keep volume low and ask permission before taking photos.
  • Get there early: good viewpoints fill up quickly.
  • Taste local cuisine: regional Easter foods are part of the cultural experience.
  • Dress appropriately: choose modest, comfortable clothing suitable for historic streets.

Visiting a village during Holy Week is a way to witness living traditions and meet communities that guard collective rituals. Plan ahead, respect local practices and enjoy the stories and flavors that each place offers.
