Balsamic Vinegar of Modena: UNESCO intangible heritage candidacy

The Consorzio Tutela Aceto Balsamico di Modena IGP has announced the start of a formal bid to recognise Balsamic Vinegar as UNESCO intangible cultural heritage. The announcement was made during a public assembly in Modena on 19 May 2026.

The Consorzio's president highlighted that the product is strongly linked to its territory, supported by centuries-old practices involving local families and community rituals.

• Participants: the bid will be presented jointly with the Traditional Balsamic consortia of Modena and Reggio Emilia, the two DOP labels, local confraternities and institutions.
• Reasoning: household production methods, community involvement and local festivities (such as the Palio di San Giovanni) are key cultural elements proposed for protection.
• Expected impact: increased territorial promotion, boosted gastronomic tourism and international recognition akin to the success achieved by Prosecco.

The Consorzio notes that preparing the dossier will take time: Italy recently secured recognition for Italian cuisine, and this new nomination will be developed within that broader context.

Key figures: about 6,000 families in the Modena and Reggio Emilia area are engaged in home production; 93% of production is destined for export, with an estimated total of 300 million bottles.
