Permanent Museum of Etruscan-Roman Bronzes in San Casciano dei Bagni

A valorisation project has been launched to establish a permanent museum for the finds from Bagno Grande. The initiative stems from an agreement between the Ministry of Culture, the Tuscany Region, the Municipality of San Casciano dei Bagni and the University for Foreigners of Siena, aiming to open the new venue by the end of 2026.

The collection

The core collection to be displayed includes important archaeological materials for the study of the ancient Mediterranean:

  • 24 bronze statues in excellent condition;
  • about 5,000 coins in gold, silver and bronze;
  • over 300 votive objects and associated materials;
  • a 90 cm bronze serpent, one of the largest ever found;
  • inscriptions in Etruscan and Latin evidencing cultural contacts between the two civilizations.

Planned works and location

The operational plan is organised along four main axes:

  • continuation of excavations with participation from students and researchers;
  • restoration and conservation of the finds;
  • museum layout to be installed in the Palazzo dell'Arcipretura, a 16th-century building in the historic centre;
  • creation of an international hub for universities and research institutes.

The total funding envisaged is €4.5 million, covering property acquisition and exhibition works.

Management and outlook

Management will be entrusted to a participatory Foundation formed by the agreement partners, to ensure long-term scientific continuity and protection. Several bronzes have already toured internationally, increasing the find's profile and laying groundwork for a major local museum showcase.

FAQ

  • When will the museum open? Opening is scheduled by the end of 2026.
  • Where will it be located? In the Palazzo dell'Arcipretura, in the historic centre of San Casciano dei Bagni (SI).
