Palazzo Lombardo draws over 1,500 visitors: Sassari leads FAI Spring Days

During the weekend of March 21–22 the FAI Delegation in Sassari recorded a notable outcome for local heritage promotion: more than 1,500 visitors attended the special openings and activities for the 34th edition of the FAI Spring Days.

The focal point of the program was Palazzo Lombardo, a 19th-century building overlooking Piazza d'Italia, recently returned to public use after an extensive restoration. Conservation works revealed decorative schemes and frescoes hidden for decades, restoring both historic value and contemporary functions to the palace, now hosting professional offices and event spaces.

Guided visits gave the public insights into the building's architecture and the restoration approach. Highlights included:

  • The noble floors featuring floral motifs, landscape scenes and allegories uncovered by the restorers;
  • The house of architect Simon Mossa opened to visitors during the event;
  • Discussions on urban history held in the Sala Sciuti at the provincial offices;
  • Guided tours led by Apprendisti Ciceroni from local high schools and by school groups.

The weekend also emphasized community involvement: university students and school pupils supported FAI volunteers as guides, and educational sessions engaged young people in learning about the value of local heritage:

  • sharing historical and architectural knowledge;
  • encouraging active citizenship;
  • promoting restored spaces for cultural and professional uses.

Why it matters: events like the FAI Spring Days increase public awareness of cultural assets, encourage their protection and create opportunities for communities to rediscover their monuments. Palazzo Lombardo exemplifies how restoration can revive a building’s role in city life and open new public uses.
