5 Unmissable Routes in Campania

Autore: Redazione 02/08/2025 12:37

Naples and its warmth, the Amalfi Coast, the islands of the Gulf, pizza, lemons, ragù… Campania is a region overflowing with attractions — from the sea to the mountains, from ancient ruins to vibrant traditions.

Its mild climate, the magic of the Tyrrhenian coast with its crystal-clear waters, and islands of rare beauty like Capri, Ischia, and Procida, together with its immense artistic and cultural heritage — in Paestum, Herculaneum, Pompeii, and the Royal Palace of Caserta — make Campania an extraordinary destination to explore.

1. Sorgente Sammaro (The Sammaro Spring)

Have you ever heard of Cilento? It’s one of Italy’s least-known yet most enchanting areas — located in the southern part of Campania, between sea and mountains in the province of Salerno. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1998, it hides secret beaches, ancient springs, fishermen’s villages, and archaeological treasures.

Among its natural wonders is the Sammaro Spring, one of Cilento’s most beautiful landscapes. Located near the village of Sacco, the spring can be reached by car and then along a short path inside the Cilento National Park.

Here you’ll find a deep limestone gorge typical of the inland area, with the remains of an old mill at the entrance. The clear turquoise pool that forms there is perfect for a refreshing dip — if you’re brave enough!

2. Sentiero delle Acque (The Water Trail), Acerno

For trekking lovers, the Water Trail in Acerno (Salerno) is a must. This woodland route starts in the town of Acerno and passes through magnificent chestnut forests, narrow streams, and pure mountain springs before reaching the bed of the Astratto stream.

The circular path, at an altitude of 700–900 meters above sea level, offers views of the village as it fades into the distance and then reappears at the end. The trail is about 11 km long and takes over 5 hours to complete — an unforgettable immersion in Cilento’s natural beauty.

3. Grotta di Seiano and Pausilypon Park (Naples)

In Bagnoli, on the western outskirts of Naples, begins a fascinating journey through time: the path to the ancient archaeological area of Pausilypon. It starts inside the Grotta di Seiano, a spectacular artificial tunnel carved through the rock, connecting Bagnoli with the Gaiola Valley.

At the end of the tunnel lies a breathtaking archaeological park where a Roman villa, theater, and odeon are still perfectly preserved. During the summer months, visitors can also enjoy activities such as snorkeling, diving, and swimming in the protected marine area nearby — an extraordinary fusion of history, sea, and nature.

4. The Antro della Sibilla (The Cave of the Sibyl), Cuma

Another must-see route is through the Phlegraean Fields and the ancient city of Cuma, a place steeped in myth and legend.

According to Virgil, Cuma was home to the Cumaean Sibyl, the legendary priestess of Apollo. The city itself was the oldest Greek colony in the western world and once hosted important temples and sanctuaries.

To reach the Sibyl’s dwelling, visitors walk through a mysterious tuff-stone tunnel, known as the Antro della Sibilla. This trapezoidal corridor, carved deep into the rock, exudes an atmosphere of mystery and reverence — a haunting reminder of the oracles and rituals of the ancient world.

Who was the Cumaean Sibyl? She was a prophetic priestess said to have written her oracles on leaves, allowing the wind to carry divine messages across time.

5. The Secret Garden of Villa Ayala, Valva

To conclude this list of must-see routes in Campania, visit the enchanting Gardens of Villa Ayala in Valva, province of Salerno.

The park feels like a journey into the past — filled with statues, fountains, and small Roman-style architectural features surrounded by flourishing nature. Rare plants and ancient trees frame this historic villa, creating a sense that the landscape itself is guarding its secrets, memories, and mysteries.

The Villa d’Ayala is a place where history meets legend, and where every corner tells a story — an oasis of peace and beauty that captures the timeless soul of Campania.

Campania is not just a destination — it’s an experience.

From the sparkling sea to the hidden mountains, every corner of this land invites you to discover, explore, and fall in love — step by step.
