Opening tonight at Teatro Vascello in Rome, La Sorella Migliore is a gripping family drama by Filippo Gili, directed by Francesco Frangipane, starring Vanessa Scalera alongside Giovanni Anzaldo and Michela Martini. Running through April 12, 2026, the production dives deep into love, guilt, remorse, and moral truth, offering audiences a raw, thought-provoking theatrical experience.
The story follows a man who, years after causing a tragic car accident, learns that the woman he hit would have had only three months to live due to a terminal illness. This revelation sparks a powerful reflection on the consequences of our actions, the weight of guilt, and the limits of conscience.
In Gili’s text, characters face complex, morally ambiguous choices. Law, personal ethics, and family bonds collide without easy answers. Giulia, played by Vanessa Scalera, navigates not just a professional role as a lawyer, but a moral landscape where every decision carries profound weight.
Scalera, with an extensive theater background alongside her television and film work, brings an intense depth to Giulia, exposing every nuance of her character’s inner tension and uncertainty.

Bringing La Sorella Migliore to life required an intensive exploration of text and character relationships. According to Filippo Gili, the play is inspired by a real human story: a man who caused a fatal accident while under the influence, and later confronted the heavy consequences of his actions. This intimate, deeply human event inspired a play that doesn’t offer easy consolation but challenges the audience to consider forgiveness, accountability, and moral understanding.
For director Francesco Frangipane, the challenge was translating these moral questions into stage action without relying on clichéd storytelling. The direction emphasizes pauses, glances, silences, and internal tension, allowing actors to fully inhabit the psychological complexity of their characters. Each scene becomes a space where what is said and what remains unspoken intersect, revealing uncomfortable truths and personal contradictions.
Actors worked in a creative laboratory, guided to explore not only their characters’ intentions but also how those characters face their inner struggles. The development of Giulia, Sandra, Luca, and the mother moves beyond psychological description to become a continuous dialogue between emotional depth and moral framework, offering audiences a theater experience that feels alive and deeply human.

La Sorella Migliore is more than a play; it’s a courageous invitation to self-reflection. It asks viewers to consider their own choices, confront lingering wounds, and recognize the unique moral journey each conscience carries.
Running through April 12 at Teatro Vascello, with evening and matinee performances, the show promises to leave a lasting impression, raising questions that echo long after the curtain falls.
