As spring approaches, just as it does every year, the Sigurtà Garden Park in Vialeggio sul Mincio is preparing to celebrate the season with the Tulip Mania Festival, an event that will run from the second half of March until early April and will be in full bloom.
Are you ready to discover it with us?
Purchased by Gerolamo Nicolò Contarini, the garden, initially surrounded by cultivated land, was dedicated to the leisure of the nobility and soon became the site of the Contarini family’s residence, the Domus Magna, undergoing expansion only when it passed into the hands of the Guarienti family, who, having owned it for around 180 years, favoured the beauty of the place over agricultural production. The most significant alterations, however, were carried out by the Maffei family, owners from 1616, and in particular by Marquis Antonio Maffei who, a lover of beauty and art and also influenced by Ippolito Pindemonte, decided to transform the 22-hectare estate into a romantic English-style garden.

After passing through the hands of numerous owners, the garden came into the possession of the Sigurtà family who, in 1941 and following the site’s decline, embarked on a comprehensive redevelopment of the area. By tapping into the river’s water supply, they restored it to its former glory, renovating the Hermitage, the Castellotto and the Votive Grotto, and expanding it to 60 hectares. Opened to the public in 1978, this site was then transformed into a proper park which, after receiving numerous accolades, now welcomes thousands of visitors eager to admire the beauty that characterises it as an earthly paradise.

Scheduled to run from 28 March to 11 April, the festival will showcase Italy’s most significant and eagerly awaited tulip display, which, together with other flowers, will create a stunning natural spectacle. Spanning the park’s numerous avenues, it will feature not only 100 floating flowerbeds on the water features and five totems describing the history of the tulip, but also 200 varieties, including the peach-coloured ‘Apricot Impression’, the ‘Flaming Parrot’ with its fringed petals, the deep purple Negrita across 4,000 square metres, and flowerbeds inspired by abstract art.

Further enriching the programme are the two ‘Artist’s Saturday’ events, the first of which took place on 21 March and the second scheduled for 18 April, during which painters, illustrators and creative artists interpret the blooms live, drawing inspiration from the beauty of the garden.
