Zangarona: an Arbëreshë village that preserves its roots

Zangarona is a small hamlet of Lamezia Terme where an Arbëreshë community keeps its language and traditions alive. With just over 350 inhabitants, the village offers a concentrated itinerary of history, linguistic heritage and cultural markers dating back to Albanian settlements from the 16th century.

What to see in Zangarona

  • Mural and Skanderbeg bust: recent works celebrating Albanian identity; the mural blends Albanian symbols with Italian elements.
  • Parish church of Santa Maria delle Grazie (Klisha Kryeprifterore Shumberia e Graxjevet): a cultural and religious hub of the village.
  • Ruins of the church of San Nicola: site where a Lord’s Prayer in the local Arbëreshë was recovered (dated to 1889).
  • Rupestrian site and Neolithic traces: cup-marked stones and a palmento testify to ancient uses of the area.
  • Dragon Rock: a rock formation carved with anthropomorphic features, surrounded by local legends.

Experiencing the village: culture and people

Since 2007, local citizens have run the "Xingarona larg dhe asër" Association to protect and promote linguistic and cultural heritage. Walking the alleys and talking with residents—often willing to share stories and lead short tours—is the best way to understand Zangarona’s cultural value.

Practical tips for visitors

  • Best time to visit: spring and early autumn for pleasant weather and local activity.
  • Getting there: Zangarona is accessed via Lamezia Terme; plan for car or local transport and wear sturdy shoes for historic streets.
  • Behaviour: respect sacred sites and historical remains; contact the local association for guided visits or events.
  • Linguistic encounter: hearing Arbëreshë spoken in daily life offers a direct experience of the community’s living heritage.

Zangarona is a compact and valuable piece of Calabria’s cultural landscape: for lovers of authentic hamlets it provides archaeological interest, contemporary art and a community committed to safeguarding its roots.
