Sepino: guardian of the archaeological site of Altilia

Autore: Redazione 02/08/2025 19:43

The village of Sepino, located at the foot of the Matese mountains, is recognized as one of the most beautiful villages in Italy. Divided between the medieval historic center and the archaeological site of Altilia, Sepino tells the story of different eras, from ancient Rome to the present day.

What to see in Sepino

The unique feature of Sepino is its division into two areas: Sepino village, the actual medieval town, and Saepinum - Altilia, the ancient Roman city.

Among the attractions of the medieval village of Sepino are:

The Church of Santa Cristina, patron saint of the town, with its marble altar inside and a bell tower visible from across the village.

The Mascherone fountain and the noble palaces of the historic center.

Just 3 km from the modern village lies ancient Saepinum, one of the most important archaeological sites in Central Italy.

Here you can admire the Roman walls with four gates of access (Boiano, Benevento, Terravecchia, and Tammaro), the forum – the meeting place of the population – the theater, the macellum, and the tabernae, the ancient shops.

Finally, you can see the remains of the baths, the basilica, and private houses with mosaic floors.

Events, culture and gastronomy

Thanks to its farming and pastoral traditions, Sepino offers a very genuine and simple cuisine: cavatelli with mutton sauce, sheep’s cheese, bread baked in wood-fired ovens, and the classic pezzente, a typical local cured meat.

The feast of Santa Cristina, with its procession and historical reenactments, also provides the chance to taste the rich dishes of Molise’s culinary tradition during local festivals.

What to see nearby

Among the attractions near Sepino are the town of Bojano, renowned for its gastronomic tradition; Campitello Matese, famous for its ski slopes and winter sports; and finally the Matese Nature Reserve, perfect for outdoor experiences and trekking trails.

So, what about you—what will you do?

Don’t forget to mention us in your stories when you visit Sepino.
