Casacalenda, millennia of history between the Montagnola and the sea

Autore: Redazione 29/09/2025 19:25

Casacalenda, an ancient city of Greek origin known as Kalena, boasts historical roots dating back to the pre-Roman period and is mentioned by Polybius as early as 217 BC.

Located in the heart of Molise, the village has passed through the centuries under the rule of the Normans, Swabians and Angevins, before becoming a fiefdom of the Ametrano family and later of the Dukes of Sangro. Despite the depopulation that has characterised the Molise hinterland, Casacalenda has been able to renew itself thanks to the cultural ferment of the community, with events such as Molise Cinema, which promote local history, traditions and identity, making the village an example of balance between past and future.

What to see in Casacalenda

Visiting Casacalenda means immersing yourself in a village that combines history, art and nature. An ideal walk starts from the Montagnola, from where you can enjoy a spectacular view of the Molise countryside and the sea.

Walking through the streets of the town centre, you will come across historic buildings such as the Torre Civica (Civic Tower) dating back to 1896, Palazzo Domenico De Gennaro, Palazzo Caradonio-Di Blasio with its library of over 6,000 volumes, Palazzo Masciotta and Palazzo Comunale, which hosts temporary exhibitions. Don't miss the three historic fountains of the village: Fonte Pietra, Fonte Nuova and Fonte della Difesa. Among the religious buildings, the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore stands out, housing Giuseppe Sammartino's Cristo Deposto (Deposed Christ).

Contemporary art takes centre stage at MAACK, an open-air museum with works by Massimo Palumbo, while the photographic exhibition at Casa tells the story of the city and its emigrants. Lovers of folk traditions will find the Museo del Bufù, dedicated to peasant musical instruments, fascinating. Finally, a few minutes from the centre is the Bosco Casale Regional Nature Reserve, a LIPU oasis where you can observe the Apennine wolf, Savi's salamander and numerous species of birds.

Local events and traditions

Casacalenda preserves traditions and events that celebrate local culture and identity. Among the most important are the patron saint festivals, moments of devotion and conviviality that enliven the town's squares with processions, music and popular performances. The town is also famous for cultural initiatives such as Molise Cinema, which promotes the area through cinema and contemporary art.

Rural and pastoral traditions are alive in celebrations dedicated to ancient crafts, while local gastronomy finds its place in summer and autumn festivals, where you can taste typical Molise dishes and local products, combining history, culture and taste in an authentic experience.
